On 4 November 2025, Bulgaria and North Macedonia signed an intergovernmental agreement to construct and operate a new cross-border rail tunnel on Corridor VIII between Deve Bair and Gyueshevo. The European Commission hailed the deal as a milestone for regional connectivity in the Western Balkans.
The project will close one of the last missing links between the Adriatic and the Black Sea, significantly improving east–west trade and travel times. For investors, it opens opportunities in rail construction, logistics hubs, and maintenance facilities, while supporting long-term CO₂ reduction through a modal shift from road to rail.
